It’s a miserable time of year for the green-fingered, but gardening season is peering over the horizon now! If you haven’t already, check out our January Gardening To Do List that will keep you busy and get you prepped for a fabulous spring.

Today, we’re bringing you Avant Home and Garden Centre’s top gardening products, as chosen by our very own Plant Area Manager, Diane Harrison (of Radio Lancashire fame).

  1. Seed compost

Planting season begins next month so now is the time to ensure your compost is warm and ready. The Gardener’s World website has some great tips to help. Bags of compost are available in our store on Wigan Road, Leyland. Just ask a member of the team for assistance.

2. Seed potatoes

Due on our shelves any day now, seed potatoes are a must-have purchase if you plan to grow your own vegetables this year. If you’re short on space, why not try our handy potato planter bags? A quick, easy and super affordable way to get in on the homegrown fun.

3. Horticultural fleece

Protect your beloved plants from the elements with some cheap and cheerful horticultural fleece. Keep it secured with these handy staples, just £3.99 for a pack of 20. Need an instant fix? Protect shrubs and fruit bushes from weather and even pests with these drawstring plant jackets.

4. Bird feed

With the cold temperatures and bitter conditions gripping the country, our wild birds need us more than ever! We recommend feeding sunflower hearts (available in store or in bulk online here) in a clean, refillable container like this one. Another great way to help our feathered friends is by providing mealworms year round, either from the ground or in feeders.

Stay tuned for more of Diane’s expert recommendations, coming soon we have her top 5 plants that your garden should not be without!
