Experts predict that this will be the worst ever year on record for the slimy garden slug due to a particularly warm winter, with above average temperatures recorded for December and January. As the weather is warming up the slugs will be multiplying rapidly underground.
At Avant we try to stock a product for every need – the child and pet friendly slug traps (£1.99 for 2), organic products like Slug Defence Gel (£3.99), Sluggo granules and Slug Rid (the last two containing Ferric Phosphate) and mechanical barriers such as Slug Gone Wool Pellets and Slugs-be-Gone, a coarse mix of granules that can be sprinkled around precious pots and border plants.
But some of our customers favour biological control methods which are new to the market and we are unable to stock due to their “live” nature. This is where Mr Fothergill’s online site comes into its own. http://www.mr-fothergills.co.uk
Nemaslug is Fothergill’s new product for controlling slug populations as naturally as possible. Nemaslug contains nematodes (microscopic worms) which eat their way into the slugs. They are simple to apply, totally safe to use and harmless to children, pets, birds and wildlife.
The greatest breakthrough though is Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer. Vine weevil is a garden pest that used to be difficult to control, but Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer is an effective alternative to chemicals again using nematodes as the answer. It is suitable for both ornamentals and edible crops in pots and on open ground where it is not permitted to use chemical controls. A regular regime of using Nemasys® Vine Weevil Killer every four weeks is the best way to keep vine weevil at bay throughout the growing season.
